Artist Statement
As a ceramicist, I am interested in the process of making and decorating vessels, while also providing a positive daily experience for the eventual owners of those vessels.
Making pottery provides my mind with puzzles to solve. Clay can be challenging. It is difficult to get a piece all the way through the process without avoiding glaze mishaps, the clay warping or cracking, or even a piece just looking silly. In turn, because the outcome can be so unpredictable, the making process is where I get most of my satisfaction. Here I am using my hands and problem solving.
Pottery is meant to be interacted with and used daily. I believe pottery can provide another dimension of pleasure to your meals and your surroundings. Being able to interact with handmade goods on a daily basis does a number of beneficial things for an individual. Firstly, it helps you live in the moment by taking notice of the slight, or major, imperfections of a piece. Also, owning a handmade piece makes one feel special and worthy. Pottery provides hygge (a Danish word/way of life interpreted as a quality of coziness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment) and therefore contributes to a sense of calm, which we all need. And lastly it gives a sense of groundedness; having used elemental basics such as clay from the earth, air, fire, and water to create each piece.
If I can provide pottery and artistic knowledge to the community, contribute to the greater good, and continue to be a potter tinkering with the process, I will be content.
